Pic&Taste... an unusual picnic

What can possibly be unusual in a picnic?, you might be asking yourself? A blanket, a basket containing good food and wine, a nice country field perhaps in the midst of the mountains, music and fun, cheerful company. Of course! These are the ingredients for an excellent picnic. But how many of you have picnicked up a tree? I can imagine that you’re smiling but my husband and I had this experience inside a hut in the trees at I Comelli in Nimis, one of the six firms who signed up to the Pic&Taste - Picnic in the Vineyards project, an original and alternative way to try out local products together with excellent wines made by these wine estates themselves. We were welcomed by Paolo, the firm’s owner, a wonderful person with whom we shared a glass of good wine and a pleasant chat. Then, with baskets in hand we moved up to our ‘nest’ in the trees. Plenty of excellent food, a bottle of Friulano wine and a great fruit tart (thanks to grandma Comelli for all this goodness) were all a treat for our palates. Vineyards and hills just starting to turn autumn yellow were the backdrop to this intimate and extremely original dinner.
And to finish it all off perfectly - or rather sweetly - a glass of excellent Ramandolo, one of my favourite wines, was a must. Full up and happy we came down from our tree house to make way for its rightful owners Elisa and Alessandro, Paolo’s children, who kindly let us use their home as they do for anyone fancying this culinary experience two metres above ground!
For all information on this experience, available until the end of October, look for Pic&Taste - Picnic in the Vineyards.   Where are you having your picnic?
